Several tribes were represented in the Native American Summer Institute this summer, including Tohono O'Odham and Yaqui students from area Tucson high schools. The project is a continuing joint venture between the tribes, as well as the Carl Hayden Bee Research Center and the University of Arizona. The Summer Program, which includes work in honey bee keeping, economics, math, science, and english, is geared toward nontraditional teachings of the core subject to assist Indian students in attaining graduation from high school. The program is responsible for the establishment of the first apiary on the San Xavier Indian Reservation.
